What makes the person who can sell a hundred thousand albums independently different from the person who can only sell a hundred?

There are many answers to this question but it's probably not what you think. Most people think that their talent is what will make them successful in the music industry. While it's true that talent is very important, I can tell you in all honesty that the most talented people are not always the most successful. I'll give you a couple of examples, and this is by no means to disrespect these artists. Those of you that are fans of hip-hop are familiar with Master P. Very few people would say that Master P is the best rapper or lyricist and he has even said so himself. However the last time I checked Master P had made over 500 million dollars. If you're familiar with Pop music you've heard of The Spice Girls. Most people wouldn't say the Spice Girls' success is because they have the best singing voices. However they have sold over 75 million albums. Both Master P and the Spice Girls have been extremely successful because they knew how to market themselves, carve out their niche and get their music to the people that wanted it. If you think about it, you probably know or have seen someone, either at church or at a talent show or just in your neighborhood, who is extremely talented but who is completely unknown. I personally have heard several unknown singers whose voices were so beautiful, pure and strong that when they sang without a microphone it vibrated in my chest and almost made me want to cry. Then on the other hand I've been to concerts from people who were famous and their voices were so bad it almost made me want to cry in another way. It's the same for rappers, musicians and entertainers in general. There are people in all genres of music and entertainment who you never hear about that are more talented than some of the ones we hear and see every day. The difference is just knowing how to get your music to the people who want to...
